Johannesburg - Five people were arrested for allegedly robbing a man after he had withdrawn money from a bank in Pineview, Grabouw, on Friday, Western Cape police said.

"According to the reports the suspects, who were driving in two vehicles, a Mercedes Benz and Mazda, where waiting in front of the bank," police spokesperson Noloyiso Rwexana said.

"The police, who were observing the movement of the suspects, witnessed the victim being grabbed by the suspects who thereafter escaped in their vehicles."

After a short chase and exchange of gunfire, which ended on Ou Kaapse Weg, the five people, between the ages of 20 and 35, were arrested around 12:50.

"During the incident, the police seized two firearms and an undisclosed amount of money [was] recovered," said Rwexana.

"Once they are charged all five suspects are expected to appear in Grabouw Magistrate’s Court."
