Cape Town - A man charged with shooting his wife and two men dead before setting his mother-in-law’s house alight, is set to appear in the Western Cape High Court next week.

Jan Silvester faces seven charges, including murder, assault and arson.

During October 2013, Silvester allegedly assaulted his wife Ellen one night by punching her in their Delft home, which was owned by her parents. She reported the assault to police.

A month later, she decided to move in with her mother Katrina Jansen in Tafelsig.

On December 19, Silvester allegedly arrived at the Tafelsig house and entered a Wendy house that was occupied by tenant Jonathan Afrikaner.

The State alleges that Silvester had an argument with his estranged wife in the Wendy house and shot both her and Afrikaner dead.

After the first shot was fired, Ellen’s brother Donald Natus ran to the Wendy house to investigate and was also shot dead.

Ellen Silvester died as a result of gunshot wounds to the chest and head, while Afrikaner died from shots to the chest and abdomen, and Natus, from a shot to the chest.

According to the summary of facts, Silvester allegedly made informal admissions to a friend and was said to be linked to the crimes through cellphone records.

On old year’s eve in 2013, the mother's house burnt down. The State alleges that Silvester set the house alight.

A judge will be allocated when he appears on Monday and the trial is set down until May 28.
