Johannesburg - A Cape Town metro police officer was shot dead in Khayelitsha on Wednesday evening, Mayor Patricia de Lille said.
Senior Superintendent Mpumelelo Hubert Xakekile, 50, was issuing a fine to a taxi driver at 21:30 when two men fired live rounds at him, De Lille said in a statement.
Xakekile, who had served in the metro police for 10 years, died on the scene.
The crime was being investigated, she said.
De Lille conveyed the city's condolences to Xakekile's family and colleagues.
"I have requested the city manager and executive director for safety and security to please make a R50 000 reward available for any information that may lead to the arrest of the individuals involved in this heinous crime," she said.
