Cape Town metro cop shot dead

2012-10-11 07:21

Johannesburg - A Cape Town metro police officer was shot dead in Khayelitsha on Wednesday evening, Mayor Patricia de Lille said.

Senior Superintendent Mpumelelo Hubert Xakekile, 50, was issuing a fine to a taxi driver at 21:30 when two men fired live rounds at him, De Lille said in a statement.

Xakekile, who had served in the metro police for 10 years, died on the scene.

The crime was being investigated, she said.

De Lille conveyed the city's condolences to Xakekile's family and colleagues.

"I have requested the city manager and executive director for safety and security to please make a R50 000 reward available for any information that may lead to the arrest of the individuals involved in this heinous crime," she said.

Authorities must demand that the community in the 'informal settlement' from where these mutants emerged and killed the officer, apprehend them and hand them over to the police, or face 'sanctions' from the Western Cape Government. This is terrorism, and unless the community actively participates in crushing this behaviour from within, they must be considered hostile to the Western Cape Government. This was a premeditated attack on the uniform and the establishment, and must be treated as such. Zero tolerance for crime and not pandering to the sensitivities of a few at the expense of the whole, is the only way to get results.

Oh Lord have mercy. A brother is dying somewhere, a woman is raped somewhere, innocent souls are violated, the elderly do not die in peace, we are not happy. You are our salvation and in thee is the redemption of our society.

Correct procedure (and I am not a cop)|: after stopping a car, first phone in and confirm license number. Then proceed to vehicle after confirmation. That should have lead the cops to the owner of the taxi right away. But again, few in SA have the intelligence.
