Cape Town mom tells of sex change

2012-04-05 11:31

Cape Town - A Muslim mother from the Cape Flats is ready to undergo the final operation that will turn her into a man.

The Daily Voice told the heartbreaking story of the 34-year-old woman but didn’t identify her. Shafieka (not her real name) told how she had felt like a man trapped inside a woman’s body since she was a little girl.

Three years ago, she finally sought medical help and started on the long and painful journey of becoming a man. The final operation, to reconstruct her vagina into a penis, was due to be carried out this week.

She told of a difficult childhood in a conservative Muslim family, in which she always wore baggy clothes to hide her body.

She was sexually abused by friends and family since the age of 4 and went to live with relatives when she was 14. She was raped again when she was 16.

Although she was interested only in girls, she was married at the age of 22 and fell pregnant, despite problems in the bedroom.

She gave birth to a boy and when he was 6 years old, she told him that she was going to make a huge change to her life.

Soon afterwards she began hormone treatment, then she had her breasts and womb removed.

Reporters commented on how masculine she appeared, with a moustache and a deep voice – finding it hard to believe that she was technically still a woman.

I believe it's a psychological problem, just as it is a psychological problem of those with eating disorders such as anorexia ... In the end, it is a self-image disorder.

      ryanbird211 - 2012-04-05 12:07

Agreed, but until they find a cure OPTION, I see no problem with people opting for this procedure should they wish to do so.

      Kim - 2012-04-05 17:25

It's not a psychological problem but a birth defect. I cannot understand why human beings are so incredibly narrow minded when it comes to genitals and sex. You accept people with deformed legs, hands, arms, faces, brains, etc but you cannot grasp the fact that you also get genital deformities. One in every 1,500 children born has a genital defect and is generally termed an intersexed infant. Pretty much what the diagnosis was for Caster Semenya. This means that something went wrong when you were being formed ie you could have been destined to be a girl and have all the girlie thingies inside but then mommy dearest produced too much testosterone at a specific period of your development and you end up being born with a penis meantime you are actually a girl and vice versa. But yes, most of you cannot even grasp the concept that a women is and XX chromosome which is the female egg and a female sperm and a man is and XY chromosome which is the female egg and a male sperm and then you also get deformities where you can have a man with one male chromosome and 3 female chromosomes ie XXXY, there is an XXY, an XO, an XXYY. There are a whole number of different genital deformities but society does not allow us to talk about it because it involves something to do with sex and sex is evil well, so the bible says!!!

      Kim - 2012-04-05 17:27

Just by the way, my grandson was born without any genitals at all - not male nor female. We had to wait for chromosome tests to come back before we knew whether to register him as a male or a female. Wake up people - stop living with your heads in the sand!!

      Marion - 2012-04-05 12:55

      How about 'mada'?

      Ally - 2012-04-05 13:29

She will probably be a better and happier PARENT. And I also hope this parent can instill compassion and understanding in her/his child. What does it matter what the child calls her? Yours is the non-comment of the day, Phistos Rampedi.

I know how she feels. I've always felt like a Tyranosaurus Rex trapped in a Homo Sapien's body. People wont understand why I prefer to grab raw steak cuts with only my teeth and gulp them up. It'd be so nice to be a scaly, 50 ft tall king of all reptiles. I guess I'll just have to wait for species reassignment technology and people's openmindedness regarding such issues to advance enough I guess. Best of luck to her.

      Alan - 2012-04-05 13:06

Watch the episode of South Park called "Mr. Garrison's Fancy New Vagina". It goes from gender reassignment to racial reassignment and yes, even species reassignment... although they only detail how to become a dolphin, but maybe it will help you on your path to releasing the small armed T-Rex inside you.

      veritas.odium.paret - 2012-04-05 13:36

Don't forget the green scales, large balancing tail and menacing saw teeth.

      The.One.and.Only.Warren.Lewis - 2012-04-05 22:06

Veritas, it is probable that tyrannosaurids had a body covering of filaments, if not feathers. See here for an interesting article about a newly discovered tyrannosaurid not having scales: http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/notrocketscience/2012/04/04/yutyrannus-a-giant-tyrannosaur-with-feathers/

Shafieka (not your real name), I wish you well both with the operation and into the future. You are a very brave woman and I salute you for taking what is a very drastic step that others in your situation may be too afraid to take because of social stigma. xxx

      Jackie - 2012-04-05 13:54

Thank you Marion!! Finally someone with a bit of feeling! I am not saying she is having a sex change because of the abuse she has suffered lets get that straight. But read how much pain she has had since 4 years old? Can any of you think how awful that would be and not get help or be saved by your family? And now a lost of you are saying shes crazy. Who cares what her son calls her - as long as when he does she is there to help him!

      Irene - 2012-04-05 15:41

Well said Marion. I salute this woman for having the courage to go through what must be an extremely difficult decision, given society's primitive views.

      Jackie - 2012-04-05 13:55

Oh hell, another one that thinks with his dick. Get over it, your little penis is totally irrelevant.

  • lytteot7 - 2012-04-05 13:36

Does this kind of operation interfere with a person's expected lifespan?

  • Generaal - 2012-04-05 14:26

Sh's insale...daz sh knw dat god creatd a man in his own image, male n female?dis severe psycological disorder ever heard of...sh's a potential imbecile

      Marion - 2012-04-05 14:37

There's nothing potential about you being an imbecile Generaal. No one would choose to do this just for the sake of doing it. Even if you cannot relate to it, please try and be a child of God and show some compassion for the pain she has had to endure throughout her life. Judge not lest ye be judged.

      Irene - 2012-04-05 15:43

Marion ~ Again, very well said.

    Well i wanna be white

      Eddie - 2012-04-05 18:26

Brother it's hard. You have to be able to do things all on your own with no AA helping you out. Having to pay for your own house. Working all your life to be told that you're too old and sorry we have to employ BEE. Does'nt matter how much experience you have & how good you are at what you do. Rather stay black my buddy, you'll be better off.

  • Dejavu - 2012-04-05 15:00

I didnt knw I could me a woman if like!

  • francoisengelbrecht1 - 2012-05-08 12:59

I think that irrespective of what your personal beliefs are about this, you have to admire her courage. I don't believe that getting the operation is a decision Shafieka (not her real name) made lightly. Nor could it have been easy to communicate it to her friends, family and child.

  • Tawizee - 2012-05-08 14:25

"The final operation, to reconstruct her vagina into a penis.." What the hack?
