Cape Town paramedics attacked

2012-07-24 14:37

Cape Town - A paramedic responding to a call in Khayelitsha at the weekend was stabbed in the arm, Western Cape emergency services said on Tuesday.

Spokesperson Keri Davids said the ambulance drove to Site C around 03:00 on Sunday after a call was logged for a woman in labour.

"We had arranged with local community members that an escort would meet the crew at a school in the area. When they arrived there was no escort to meet them and two guys approached the ambulance," she said.

The two paramedics assumed the men were escorts, but changed their minds when one of the men pointed a gun.

"He realised that it was a toy gun and [took] the toy from the man. At that point the second man stabbed the practitioner in the arm and ran away from the ambulance."

The attack was reported to police. No arrests have been made.

Another one! And the people in the informal settlements wonder why ambulances do not come out or takes a very long time to respond to their calls. This is beyond f$%king sick, attacking emergency workers!!!! God could not have created these animals. They must be devil spawns!!!

What a crying shame! Absolutely disgusting that someone with good intentions and knowledge to assist is targeted in this way. Hope the paramedic recovers quickly.

paramedics should not respond to emergency calls in those locations unless under police escort. Can't get police escort don't go. The people in the locations wanne behave like animals they can die like animals

You have to be a special kind of scum to attack a paramedic...

  • shirley.steenkamp - 2012-07-24 14:56

Realy just how low will so called humanity go!???? Stop sending ambulances to these areas until the "mob Justice brigade" can sort these tsotsis out!

      tolene - 2012-07-24 17:29

Shirley I am afraid if this happens the ambulances will be blamed for being racist.. It won't be seen as concern for paramedics safety, and they won't 'understand' why the paramedics are not helping them and won't see the problem with the stabbings etc of our paramedics. These guys have a duty to respond to each call and I take my hat off to all of them and pray for their safety. I would suggest that the police force create a sub-division (the ANC seem to love doing this these days), to have one police escourt for each ambulance out on the road and that NO ambulance should go to a call without the escourt, however this could be the difference between life and death... Sad that this is what is happening in the poor areas, very, very sad that the government is not looking after the very people that are voting for them!!!

  • shanleigh.sewsanker - 2012-07-24 14:57

that may have been an attempt to steal the ambulance and convert it for a taxi.

  • bradley.kecskes - 2012-07-24 14:57

    not the first and not the last. May I propose a security officer for each van/medic team...heavily armed(-;

      bradley.kecskes - 2012-07-24 14:59

I will volunteer over weekends...if it means shooting some scum, no one touches my paramedics!!!

  • bevan.carpenter.1 - 2012-07-24 15:00

Typical, then the paramedics will stop going there and then we have service delivery protests, the cycle of South Africa

  • cjamneck - 2012-07-24 15:11

Insane times we live in...is the paramedic ok?

  • badballie - 2012-07-24 15:13

Easy all ambulances must simply boycott Khayelitsha, which they are legally entitled to do, for disbelievers, the law gives all medical staff the full and unquestionable right to refuse to render any medical service if they believe it will place their own lives in danger. Once again the honest and good citizens of this country must accept full responsibility for what has happened. You allow criminals in your neighborhood and by your silence allow them to prosper and gain control. sort out the criminals in your area and this sort of thing will not happen.
