Cape Town- A man is expected to appear in court later on Monday after police found an illegal perlemoen (abalone) processing facility at a residence in Table View.

Border police and Khayelitsha tactical response team members accompanied detectives to the home in Study Street around 14:30 on Sunday, said Western Cape police spokesperson Frederick van Wyk.

A total of 4 757 units of shucked perlemoen, with an estimated street value of R500 000, were found.

“Numerous items of equipment, including large stainless steel cooking pots, gas cylinders and burners, scales, fans, plastic containers and shelves were seized,” Van Wyk said.

The 46-year-old suspect was set to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court.
