Cape Town - A taxi carrying 35 children was impounded on Thursday morning during a scholar transport operation in Zonnebloem, the City of Cape Town’s traffic services said.

"The children were found sitting on top of each other and on the vehicle’s floor when it was pulled over," spokesperson Richard Coleman said.

The driver did not have an operating permit. An official drove the children to their schools after the taxi was pulled off the road.

The operation, which took place between 06:30 and 08:30, resulted in 19 vehicles being seized for operating without permits or driving off their designated routes.

Two drivers were arrested. One of them owed over R60 000 in fines.
