Cape Town - A Western Cape primary school teacher has been arrested for allegedly raping a 12-year-old pupil multiple times over a period of months.

The 39-year-old suspect is alleged to have picked up the girl while she walked home from her Kraaifontein school, the Cape Argus reported. He would then take her back to his house where he would rape her, Western Cape police said.

The man was arrested after the girl’s father reported the matter to police.

The girl is receiving counselling and police officials said they would investigate to see if there were more victims.

The SA Council for Educators stated in its 2012/2013 reported, tabled in Parliament, that it received a total of 556 complaints against teachers for various "alleged offences or breaches" between 1 April last year and 30 March this year.

Of these, 104 were for "sexual misconduct, including rape".
