Cape Town - Firefighters, backed by a squadron of waterbombing aircraft, were on Sunday afternoon still battling to get a brush fire in the Blouberg area of Cape Town under control.
The fire, which has raised a massive plume of smoke on the
eastern shore of Table Bay, has been burning since Saturday, fanned by a strong south easter.
City fire control spokesperson Gregory Carolissen said firefighters there were supported by waterbombing from one helicopter and four fixed-wing aircraft.
Though the wind was making things difficult, all danger to a
nearby housing estate had been averted.
"We are doing our best there," he said.
He said firefighters had also been called out to a veld fire off
Dassenberg Road in the direction of Atlantis.
The fire burning since Saturday above Gordon's Bay was
"basically under control to a certain extent, depending on if the wind is going to lie down", he said.
