Field fire near Stanford

About 100 people were evacuated from their homes as runaway fires, fanned by strong winds, spread over mountains in the Bainskloof Pass near Wellington and Stanford.

Cape Town - Fires raging in the Bainskloof and Stanford areas of the Western Cape on Tuesday were being monitored because of a rise in wind speed and temperature.

"We've got two teams working on the Stanford fire and two teams at the Bainskloof fire," Working on Fire spokesperson Leanne Mckrill said.

"The fires are ongoing... the temperatures and wind speed have a direct correlation to the behaviour of the fire."

About 100 people were evacuated from their homes at the weekend when runaway fires fanned by strong winds spread over mountains in the Bainskloof Pass near Wellington and near Stanford.

In the Slangkop Valley, near Bainskloof, farmworkers and their families were evacuated as a fire roared through the area damaging two houses.

Campers at Steenbok Park were also asked to leave.
