Johannesburg - Three men appeared in court on Monday in connection with a tractor accident which claimed the lives of eight people, the National Prosecutions Authority said.

"Isaak Stuurman, James van Rooyen, and Gert Engelbrecht were expected back in the Tulbagh Magistrate's Court on 20 August," NPA spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said.

The men face charges of culpable homicide after the January incident.

An earth-moving tractor was crossing the Klein Berg River bridge in Gouda when the incident happened in January this year.

Two trucks approached the bridge. The first was able to brake in time but the second swerved, hit a stationary vehicle, and then crashed into the tractor.

The bed of the truck was ripped off and flung into the river.

Twenty-two other people were injured in the accident.
