Johannesburg - One prisoner was shot and killed and another was wounded on Sunday as they attempted to escape from the Lansdowne police station in Cape Town, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) said.
"There was an attempted escape when a police officer visited the cell area and he was overpowered by a prisoner who was being held there," spokesperson Moses Dlamini.
"The prisoner wrestled the keys from the policeman and then he let loose another four suspects. They tried to escape and police shot and killed one suspect who was being held for the possession of stolen property."
Another man who was being held for housebreaking and theft was wounded during the shooting, but he managed to escape.
Damlini said three other prisoners were recaptured.
The IPID has opened two dockets for investigation - one for murder and one for attempted murder.
