Car crashes into 18-wheelers

Johannesburg - Two people were killed in a head on collision between a truck and a car on the M25 near Bapsfontein on Saturday, paramedics said.

Chris Botha, spokesperson for Netcare 911, said the accident happened just after 19:00, when a car drove into the lane of two oncoming 18-wheeler trucks.

"It collided into the side of the first truck and then hit head-on into the second heavy goods vehicle," said Botha.

Ekurhuleni Metro Police spokesperson Mveli Nhlapo said the driver of the Corsa Lite car had lost control of the vehicle on a curve before it drove into the trailer of one of the trucks.

"Speed can not be ruled out in the accident," he said.

The 32-year-old driver, along with another passenger of the car, were taken by ambulance to the Tembisa hospital in a serious condition.

Another passenger was airlifted to the Charlotte Maxeke hospital in a critical condtion.

Nhlapo said the men were driving home from Brakpan to Tembisa on the road between Bapsfontein and Kempton Park.

In Durban, two people were killed and 15 seriously injured when the taxi they were travelling in overturned on Saturday night, paramedics said.

ER24's Derrick Banks said the accident, involving a Quantum minibus, happened just after 18:00.

The cause of the accident was not immediately known.

In yet another accident, this time in Bloemfontein, two men died when their City Golf crashed into an Audi A3.

The driver of the Audi, a woman, was treated for possible neck and back injuries.
