Cape Town - Two suspected car thieves were arrested after they crashed into a pole while trying to flee the authorities, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Sunday.

Spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker in a statement said the trio has been hospitalised and will appear in court soon after they were nabbed in Zwelisha on Friday night.

"KwaMakhutha police were performing crime prevention duties when they spotted a stolen vehicle. [Officers] gave chase and the suspects sped off," he said.

"Along Sheleni Road in Adams Mission, the suspects crashed into a pole during the chase and were injured. Police confronted and apprehended two suspects, aged 28 and 30."

Both were found to be in possession of unlicensed guns, which police seized.

In a separate incident that same night, Greenwood Park police spotted a hijacked vehicle on North Coast Road.

"They pursued the vehicle along the M25 highway where a shootout ensued. The suspects opened fire on police and police returned fire," Naicker said.

"One suspect, who was shot and injured in the knee, was arrested. The others fled and abandoned the vehicle."

During the shootout, the suspects allegedly shot at a passing vehicle, damaging its windscreen. The vehicle driver was not injured.

"A case of attempted murder was opened. Police are still on the trail of the men who fled," he said.

The firearms seized in both incidents will be subjected to ballistic tests to determine if they were used in any other crimes, Naicker added.

No police officers were injured during the pursuits.
