Upington - Two men and a woman have died in an accident on Sunday involving three cars on the R31 in Kuruman, Northern Cape, paramedics said.

"It appears that as an Opel Astra was about to overtake it collided into the rear of a Ford Focus which then side swiped a VW Polo and the Astra continued and collided head on into a Toyota Fortuna," said ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson.

"Sadly, due to the impact and extensive damage to the Opel Astra, the three occupants died in their seats. The two men in their late 20s and woman in her early 20s had suffered fatal injuries and they were declared dead." Their bodies needed to be cut from the wreckage, with the accident taking place around 01:00.

The occupants of the three other vehicles sustained only minor injuries.

Police were investigating.
