Johannesburg - At least 12 cars were on fire at a parking lot in Woodmead Drive on Friday, paramedics and Johannesburg emergency services said.

"We received a call at [11:45] that over 20 cars were on fire in the area," ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said.

"Paramedics and rescue personnel are on the scene. No injuries have been reported and I can confirm at least 10 cars are on fire."

The city's emergency service's spokesperson Nana Radebe said firefighters arrived on the scene, near Maxwell Drive, shortly after noon.

"It's about 12 cars that were involved in the incident," Radebe added.

Radebe said details were still unclear.

But Michka Masana whose nephew was at the religious gathering told News24 the cars caught flames from burning grass. She confirmed that there had been no injuries reported.

Masana said the gathering at Mia's Farm was an Ijtima, or the gathering for prayer of Muslims from various mosques.
