Johannesburg - A cash box exploded in a car in Orlando West, Johannesburg, on Monday, metro police said.
The occupants abandoned the car in the middle of the road, spokesperson Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said. Nobody was hurt.
Cash boxes contain substantial amounts of money and are usually transported in cash-in-transit vans by security services.
Minnaar said the box contained an explosive substance. It usually detonates when someone tries to force the box open, staining the money with ink.
The blast happened on the Klipspruit Valley Road.
Motorists were urged to use alternate routes as the blue Volvo was blocking the road.
