Cato Manor crime unit shutting down
Durban - The organised crime unit at Cato Manor will shut down its offices permanently, the Hawks said on Wednesday.
"Investigations were done on the Cato Manor crime unit and a decision has been made to move the officers to the organised crime unit's head office in central Durban," said spokesman McIntosh Polela.
In the past, there have been allegations that a death squad was operating in the Cato Manor crime unit.
The Mercury reported on Wednesday that commanding officer Major General Johan Booysen was served with a notice of intended suspension on Sunday.
Booysen reportedly had to answer to allegations of negligence or failing to act in connection with the alleged death squad which operated in the Cato Manor crime unit.
Booysen who has worked for more than 34 years as a policeman has received several awards and accolades. He worked in the murder and robbery unit and the crime intelligence unit.
Polela said he could not comment on Booysen's intended suspension because it was an internal matter.
