Johannesburg - Sunnyside police arrested two men who had allegedly been holding people up for their cellphones on Friday morning, a spokesperson said.
The break came when a woman was almost robbed of her phone on the corner of Queen Wihelmina and George Storrer roads in Pretoria on Friday morning, Inspector Malose Mashiane said.
The men ran into Queen Wilhelmina park and police, who had spotted them, cornered them and apprehended them.
They were searched and an unlicensed firearm with no ammunition was found, in addition to a cellphone that had been stolen near Loftus stadium earlier.
Police scrolled through the phone and contacted the victim's father and were told that he was at Sunnyside police station reporting the theft.
Police took the men to the police station and the man, who was reporting the cellphone theft, recognised them and they were arrested.
Mashiane appealed to people who had experienced similar crimes in the area to come forward and see if they can identify the pair with the possibility of linking them to other crimes.
