Virginia - Welkom cemetery killer Maartens van der Merwe was jailed for life on Friday by the Virginia Circuit Court for the murder of Michael van Eck.

Judge Ian van der Merwe also sentenced Van der Merwe to ten years for robbery with aggravating circumstance and five years for desecrating the body of his victim.

He was accused of killing and dismembering Welkom resident Michael van Eck, 23, with his fiancée Chané van Heerden.

Judge Van der Merwe did not declare Van der Merwe a dangerous criminal.

Maartens van der Merwe applied for leave to appeal on the murder charge.

The judge denied the application.
