Pretoria - Two out of three car hijackers have been arrested after being chased by police from the air and on the ground between Centurion and Tembisa on Friday afternoon, Pretoria police said.

The drama started when a black Range Rover suddenly pulled in front of a man driving a white Chrysler on the N1 onramp to John Voster Drive in Centurion mid-afternoon on Friday, spokesperson Warrant Officer Dave Muller said.

They blocked his route, got out and shot him in the upper body.

Then they went to the back of his car, took some bags out and sped off.

An armed response company and Lyttleton police received the call for help. When they got the description of the black Range Rover, one of the police cars in the area had spotted them, but the Range Rover managed to escape.

A helicopter was deployed to aid in the search, with Tembisa and Johannesburg police also searching for them on the ground.

The Range Rover was then spotted in Rabie Ridge in Midrand.

One of the flying squad vehicles crashed into the yard of a house during the chase, but the officers were not injured.

Police finally managed to corner two of the men and arrest them, but a third managed to get away.

Police found cash on them that they suspect was stolen during the hijacking and also found that the Range Rover had been stolen in Sandton a few days ago.

The victim of the hijacking was in a critical condition in hospital, Muller said.

The two men arrested would appear in court on Tuesday on charges of attempted murder, armed robbery and possession of stolen property.
