Pretoria -  President Jacob Zuma has assigned Minister in The Presidency for Performance Monitoring and Evaluation, Collins Chabane, to attend to challenges at Walter Sisulu University (WSU) in the Eastern Cape.

Zuma has asked Chabane to work with all stakeholders to ensure that the culture of learning is restored at the university.

"We need to work collectively with all stakeholders to urgently ensure that all learners return to class and that the culture of learning is restored at the university” said Minister Chabane.

Chabane is currently consulting with relevant stakeholders in government and will hold discussions with all affected parties.

He has already established a technical committee comprising labour and higher education personnel.

When the university was temporary closed recently, the protracted strike had been in its seventh week.

Staff were demanding an eight to 10% increase, while management was only offering 4.25% backdated to January this year.
