Chanelle accused in court over docket

2011-12-09 13:11

Pretoria - The suspended Pretoria police officer arrested in connection with the Faerie Glen drive-by shooting of Chanelle Henning was back in court on separate charges, the Pretoria News reported on Friday.

Gerhardus du Plessis appeared in the Specialised Commercial Crime Court on Thursday for corruption, relating to stolen docket, and was represented by a Legal Aid Board lawyer, Donald du Plessis.

His previous lawyer withdrew from the case during his last appearance in November.

Plea bargain

The court heard that Du Plessis, 34, who also faces separate charges of conspiracy to murder, murder and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, had abandoned his bail application in the Henning murder case and was engaged in plea bargain negotiations.

The corruption and murder cases are not related.

His lawyer said it would be pointless to reinstate bail on the corruption case as his client was currently being held at the Garsfontein police station for the murder charges.

Following a request by Donald du Plessis, the court agreed the State should refund Gerhardus's brother who had paid the R2 000 bail.

The court also agreed to combine the corruption charges with the other charges.

      Wish they would find out the whole truth on this one. Chanelle, her son and her family really come across as true victims of this crime. How anyone who is able to think logically and has already been entrusted to uphold the law could become involved in matters like this, is totally beyond me ...

      @Ann. The answer is DRUGS.

      @ Craig - thank you - it just seems so sad that so many lives have been irrevocably altered because of a careless and stupid decision and action.

    Once again our SAPS officers who are allowed to abuse their power. I'm in a similar situation as Chanelle Henning. I have been receiving death threats and threats of arrest for 6 months. The police have laughed at me when trying to report this. I received a call from a Warrant Officer on Saturday telling me he was coming to arrest me - he is not even the investigating officer on the charge that this mad woman opened against me. When I told him to come he said he would rather phone me on the Monday to arrest me. I was at the station the other day to once again prove to the police that someone is trying to lure me away for a purpose and this Warrant Officer was in the offices. When I asked him why he had threatened to arrest me - he told me - please wait for it! He is aware that there are many officers at their station who use his name to threaten people with arrest. And he hasn't reported this to his superiors?? A bit far fetched - he is getting paid to do it!
