Ficksburg - Charges against one of the policemen linked to the murder of Ficksburg protester Andries Tatane were withdrawn in the Ficksburg Regional Court on Monday.

The State withdrew all charges against Kanathasen Munsamay and magistrate Hein van Niekerk excused him from the proceedings.

The trial of the seven remaining policemen then got under way.

The accused are Nicodemus Israel Moiloa, Mothusi Magano, Mphonyana Ntaje, Olebogeng Mphirime, Solomon Moeketsi, Jonas Skosana and Isaac Finger. They stand accused of murder and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

All seven have pleaded not guilty to both charges.

Tatane was killed in Meqheleng, allegedly by public order police, during a service delivery protest on April 13 last year.

Video footage showed riot police beating Tatane during the march to the Setsoto municipal offices in Ficksburg. Over several days, roads were blocked with stones and bricks, and tyres set alight.

The State called its first witness, Phillip Selokoe, the deputy chairperson of the Meqheleng Concerned Citizens group.

The magistrate adjourned for lunch soon after Selokoe began his testimony.

What I saw on TV shows me you do not know anything about this issue. The TV footage shows a lot of Policemen attacking an unarmed man like a pack of dogs. Those Policemen are not worth the name Policemen. If there was just one or two Policemen then nothing would have happened, they only perform when they are a lot together and they are armed. Does it really take such a lot of trained Policemen to subdue one man?.

all the cops you saw on that footage were summoned to stop the riots, tatane was shot simply because he was not complying to the peace officers instructions. Its high time whereby public should swallow their pride and respect the police when they are on duty.

Striking similarities between the Apartheid Police & Democratic Police? Only the words "force" and "services" and blue and khakhi so it seems so far, appear different as the terror against citizens contnues.

I wouldn't be surprised if they all walk free tomorrow - SA justice is an EISH

It can only happen with a direct instruction from the ANC, like in the case of our spy boss. It will be a sad day should they go free.
