Charter boat capsizes in Hout Bay

2012-10-13 15:34

Johannesburg - A charter boat carrying about 50 people capsized in Hout Bay, Cape Town on Saturday afternoon, the National Sea and Rescue Institute said.

The charter boat was near Duiker Island when it capsized at about 15:00, NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said.

NSRI rescuers as well as several other charter boats managed to rescue many of the people who had fallen into the sea.

"Some of the people have been injured and CPR efforts are being conducted on some of [them]," Lambinon said.

Three people reportedly died and 50 were saved, the city's disaster management spokesperson Wilfred Solomons-Johannes tweeted.

Lambinon said authorities were asking the public to stay away from Hout Bay while rescue operations were ongoing.

I see so many times that charter boats go out to sea when the conditions is not safe but they think they have big boats and they are chasing the bucks , I am a skipper for well over 20 years and it makes me de moer in , next place for a tragedy is Gansbaai the do shark charters when not one fisherman will go to sea because of strong winds , wind today 15 knots and stronger , IDIOTS

no matter how many years experience you may have, and believe me its nice to brag... doesn't mean you know what you are doing... it is easy to criticise people standing on the outside... so don't think you are so clever, especially if you don't have all the facts.... and believe me YOU DON'T

God clearly loves funeral parlours. God doesn't seem to make any worthwhile efforts to limit their business. Hmmmm? Any worthwile comments of observations to the contrary?

How scary! Just last week we went on one of those charter boats with our kids! My prayers are with the survivors and the families of those that did not make it. RIP :(

I am a cab driver and regularly take tourists to the boat going to Seals Island. Last time i been on that boat the water was very choppy with huge swells. I could not understand how the boat company could take clients in such dangerous conditions. It was so windy and yet the boat was less that five meters from the rocky island. I got so scared and decided to never set my feet back on that boat.

Last week Sunday my family and I also went on one of these charters to Seal Island, it was evident, when we got there that the sea was very rough and the skipper struggled to turn the boat around. Never again.....

My wife and I were out on the Miroshka 3 weeks ago! She is an awesome boat. Very stable, high tech safety equipment, exceptionally well trained staff and the Skipper knew how to handle her safely!! We were out at sea when we ran into roughish sea but she was stable and handled the waves with ease! This is truly tragic. Our condolences to those families who have lost loved ones!

this is absolute bu$%^&it. get your facts straight before you publish things on an international news forum... if not for people like me or your readers, then out of respect for those who lost their lives. their were not nearly 50 people on board at the time of the incident, the number was 33... please guys, I will never use news24 as an accurate news broadcaster EVER.

      martin.w.stander - 2012-10-14 20:52

I do admit that the final number of all on board was in fact 38, and maybe I jumped the gun but I am not claiming to be a news broadcaster.
