Caracas - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez on Wednesday announced a two-day visit to South Africa next week, where he will meet with "our friend" President Thabo Mbeki, in preparation of an Africa-South American summit Caracas will host later this year.
"We're going to visit our friend President Mbeki" next Sunday, Chavez said on radio and television during a meeting with his cabinet.
Chavez said his two-day visit to South Africa was "very important ... for the country of (former president and anti-apartheid hero) Nelson Mandela," but did not disclose his agenda or who he would be travelling with.
However, he did remind the media that Caracas will hold "a summit of African and South American countries" at the close of the year on which, he said, "we're already working".
