Johannesburg - A toddler was killed and five other people injured when a car drove into four pedestrians along the R300 in Blue Downs, in the Western Cape, paramedics said on Sunday.
E24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson said two women and a man were seen walking with the boy about 15:00.
"A VW Citi Golf, which was travelling in the direction of Brackenfell, collided into them near the Van Riebeeck Road off-ramp.
"The little boy had been flung from the road and was found lying down a short embankment at the side of the road," said Jackson.
The boy, estimated to be 2 years old, died on the scene.
The three adult pedestrians all suffered moderate injuries and they were treated on scene and then taken to hospital for care.
Jackson said the Citi Golf had veered off the road following the initial impact and then rolled, colliding into a cement fence at the side of the road.
"The rescue team had to use the Jaws of Life to remove the two occupants of the Golf from the wreckage as they had been trapped inside."
The woman and man in their 40's suffered moderate injuries and they too were taken to Tygerberg hospital for treatment.
