Johannesburg - One person has died and 100 others were injured when two buses collided on the R36 in Ohrigstad, Limpopo, on Saturday, paramedics said.

The deceased was a child, said ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak.

The accident happened around 10:30 near the Strydom tunnel.

"It is understood that the two buses collided head on," he said.

"Although information is still sketchy at the moment, it is understood that one of the buses crashed down the embankment and came to a standstill."

Despite it being a weekend, Vermaak said one of the buses had been transporting schoolchildren.

An emergency medical helicopter had been dispatched to the scene to airlift some of the critically injured patients.

Limpopo Transport department spokesperson Joshua Kwapa said of the injured, 68 were in a serious condition. By 15:30, he confirmed there were no other fatalities. Kwapa said one of the buses had a brake failure and crashed head-on into the other bus. The bus that had difficulties was hired from Thwala Luxury Tours in Bolobedu.

It had a roadworthy certificate which would have expired at the end of August this year, said Kwapa.

The bus was transporting learners from Makolasabe High School in Limpopo, and it was unclear where it was headed.

Three other vehicles collided while attempting to avoid the bus crash.
