Durban - A 39-year old man arrested in connection with child pornography involving children as young as 3 years old, has been released on R1 000 bail.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said the man made a brief appearance in the Pinetown Magistrate’s court on Monday.

She said the man would have to report to police twice a week in Pietermaritzburg, where he currently lives, and surrender his passport.

Earlier police spokesperson Jay Naicker said the man was arrested on Sunday in Pietermaritzburg and detained overnight at the Pinetown police station.

He faces charges of being in possession of child pornography and contravening the Film and Publications Act.

Naicker said the arrest followed investigations and an August 2014 raid on the man’s home in Durban’s plush Kloof suburb, where he lived at the time.

“He was found in possession of a memory stick with child pornography consisting of children as young as 3 years old. Detectives steered the investigation for months to gather enough evidence to present a thoroughly investigated and well prepared docket for prosecution,” said Naicker.
