Johannesburg - Two children were killed on Monday in a fire in Dutywa, north of Butterworth in the Eastern Cape, police said.

"Two children aged eight, a girl, and her 6-month-old younger brother have this morning [Monday] at about 08:20 died in a... fire," said Captain Jackson Manatha.

"It is alleged that the fire also destroyed seven shacks at Dutywa town."

The children were apparently left alone by their grandmother who went to attend a church service in Tsolo.

Police have opened an inquest docket.
