Durban - Two children are in a critical condition after being struck by lightning in the rural area of eSidumbini in the Ilembe district on Saturday, KwaZulu-Natal paramedics said.

Paramedics received a frantic call for assistance at around 19:00, reporting that a house had been struck by lightning, said KZN Emergency Medical Services spokesperson Robert Mckenzie.

"The paramedics were directed to the two children, a girl aged six years old and a four year old boy," said Mckenzie.

"The children were both in a critical condition and paramedics worked frantically to treated them, before transporting them to Montebello hospital for continued medical care," he said.

The KZN province continued to experience downpours on Saturday. The wet weather conditions were expected to continue throughout the weekend.

Mckenzie said paramedics remained on high alert to respond to all calls.
