Johannesburg - The body of a 3-year-old girl was discovered by a farmworker in Vredendal, Western Cape police said on Thursday.
Warrant Officer November Philander said the mother reported the child missing on Monday, and that the body was discovered later the same day.
A post mortem showed that the child died from being hit on the head with a blunt object. There was also evidence that she had been raped.
No arrests had been made.
Asked to confirm SABC reports that two children could have been responsible for the murder, he responded: "We are investigating all allegations".
A case of child neglect had been opened against the mother, Philander said.
