Church award for Ramphele

2010-09-30 15:59
Johannesburg – The Anglican Church of Southern Africa says it has given its highest award for lay members to businesswoman and social activist Mamphela Ramphele.

Archbishop Thabo Makgoba had admitted her to the order of Simon of Cyrene at the church's provincial synod in Benoni on Wednesday.

She was "one of South Africa's greatest prophetic voices", the church said in a statement on Thursday.

She had acted "with fierce determination" to overcome the injustices of apartheid and still continued in her campaign for justice and for the rights of women, the poor and marginalised.
