City plans more bins and staff for cleaner streets

PLANS are in place to increase the number of bins around the city in an attempt to encourage people to keep the streets clean.

Municipal spokesperson Nqobile Madonda said the increase in bins will also mean an increase in staff.

The Witness published an article this week on the state of the city’s streets which resulted in councillors urging residents to take responsibility for the cleanliness of their city.

Madonda said the city’s sweepers are divided into groups per four quadrants to tackle street cleaning.

“There are also street sweepers in the evening, cleaning the CBD,” she said.

Madonda said cleaning of stormwater drains is done as part of the maintenance programme. “The respective departments are continuously looking at ways to improve the level of service delivery with the (usually limited) allocated financial and human resources, and equipment available to use,” she said
