Cleric ordered to retract stoning statement

2012-05-24 08:27

Johannesburg - The South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg has ordered Nazareth Baptist church spokesperson Enoch Mthembu to retract a call to stone artist Brett Murray to death, The Times reported on Thursday.

Mthembu has five days to retract the statement in public.

Murray's lawyer, Okyerebea Ampofo-Anti, said the interdict restrained Mthembu from stating Murray should be stoned to death or physically harmed in any way.

"If Mthembu does not apologise he would be in contempt of court and might also face arrest. The judge granted the order against Mthembu, not the church," Ampofo-Anti said.

Mthembu told the daily he would not apologise.

"Where in the world can you find a person disrespecting the president in that way? He [Murray] should be the first one to apologise. I will never do that. He is too arrogant."

Mthembu called for Murray to be stoned for his artwork The Spear, which depicts Zuma with his genitals exposed.

The ANC was set to argue in the High Court in Johannesburg on Thursday for an urgent interdict to get the painting - which has since been defaced by two people - removed from the Goodman Gallery in Johannesburg.

It also wants the City Press newspaper to remove a photo of the painting from its website.

NBC will have to fire this priest--he is bringing their church into disrepute. To advocate to kill people from the pulpit in the name of the church is a serious crime--or is this just part of the general lawlessness sweeping the country--A professor that will advocate and commit crime, taxi drivers in Durban that is ABOVE THE LAW NOW, corruption that is a general past time,-- and now this. ???

Imagine if such a death threat was made against the pres. The anc will have that priest arrested , tortured maimed and left for half dead and he will spend his life in jail if he survived the arrest.

Its sad when people of God react like this. Religion is suppose to be about forgiveness

      Schmee - 2012-05-24 09:35

I don't think he got as far as reading the new testament.

      Charles - 2012-05-24 12:36

He aint no person in service of God... he has been dealing with the dark forces... that the only way he can make this statement without feeling the sadness of the True Lord Jesus Christ. The true followers of our Father sees no colour and knows exactly what Life is about and it aint condeming anyone in any way as the true child knows that there is ONE power and ONE power only that can Judge...

Maybe Murray must capitalise on these events in SA. Ha can make a series of paintings as events unfold-- the defacing, the church's death threat, the court ruling, His unjust sentencing to prison for 20 years- the failure of SA---let us hope though that he can paint more positive topics and that TRUE justice will prevail.

It also wants the City Press newspaper to remove a photo of the painting from its website. Its already viral across the internet. Wikipedia has an article about it.The ANC should know how the internet works!
