Johannesburg - Former US president Bill Clinton received a super star welcome when he addressed a group of young community volunteers at the Nelson Mandela Foundation in Houghton, Johannesburg, on Tuesday.
"Hold still, hold still," he said as he tried to sign a young performer's drum while people around him jostled to get closer.
Youths from the volunteer group City Years and grown-ups waved pieces of paper and copies of his autobiography to be signed to the deafening accompaniment of a group of young drummers and singers.
"You were great today," he wrote on the drum of performer Nicolette Sebatane.
A heavy security detail kept people at bay but was unable to stop a group of drummers from draping themselves around Clinton for a photograph.
He spoke of the need for global unity and urged the youth to pursue the African notion of "ubuntu".
Clinton is in South Africa as part of a six-country tour of projects his Clinton Foundation has in southern Africa.
