Johannesburg - A cold front sweeping the country signalled the approach of winter with snowfall expected in some parts, the SA Weather Service said on Saturday,

Forecaster Karl Loots said snow was expected on Saturday in the high areas of the Eastern Cape, Lesotho and the southern and eastern Free State.

"There will be heavy rainfall in the Eastern Cape coastal areas mainly from East London westwards," said Loots.

The weather service issued a warning for very cold conditions for Eastern Cape interior, the Western Cape and the southern parts of both the Northern Cape and the Free State.

"From here onwards we are going to be seeing much cooler conditions over the next week. Temperatures will rise, but we are not going to reach 20° probably, until Friday.

"We have a major warning for very cold conditions over the high areas of the Eastern Cape and Lesotho," said Loots.
