Bloemfontein - The wintry weather that has gripped the country has brought some of the coldest temperatures in years to parts of the Eastern Cape, Northern Cape and Free State.

Sandly Stretton, a farmer from Molteno in the Eastern Cape, says he recorded a minimum temperature of -13.5°C on Sunday night, reported Volksblad.

According to a weather expert, Molteno is one of the coldest places in the country.

Stretton said one never really got used to the cold, but learned to live with it.

“During the night you just put on warm clothes and during the day you stay warm by working hard.”

Snow has been seen on several mountains in the province.

Teacher Pauli van Zyl said it was -11°C in Barkly East on Monday.

“I have never been as cold as I’ve been here now in the 27 years that I’ve lived here,” she said.

In Bloemfontein and Kimberley it was -6°C on Sunday.

A weather forecaster said it will remain cold for the next few days, with severe frosts expected. Daytime temperatures are expected to rise, before another cold front hits the country on Thursday.
