Port Elizabeth - A Port Elizabeth-based funny man is due to appear in court on Thursday on a theft charge, the Eastern Province Herald reported.
The man was reportedly arrested on Christmas Eve (Monday).
The comedian on Wednesday confirmed the pending charge after an anonymous caller said the comedian was arrested on Monday following a complaint lodged by the owner of an art and craft shop.
The man's wife told the Herald that the allegations "are ridiculous - we are going to respond to them in court with our lawyer. But they are ludicrous".
Neither she nor her husband would divulge the circumstances around his alleged arrest or the exact nature of the charge.
The comedian responded to The Herald's questions with a joke: "I think your anonymous informant is a little dyslexic.
"I wasn't arrested for shop lifting, I was arrested for getting a lift to the shop!"
Asked about the circumstances around the funny man's arrest, police would only confirm that a man had been arrested for theft and taken to the Walmer police station.
They would not, however, reveal the man's name or age as he had not yet appeared in court, the newspaper said.
Police said the man had been released on bail and would be presented with charges in court later on Thursday.
