Johannesburg - The Meyerton community closed down the town
at the weekend to search for and catch five men who tried to break into a house
while a woman and her children were at home, it was reported on Monday.
"My children and I were alone at home when the dogs
went crazy outside. I went to investigate and found five men at the front door,
each with a tool in his hand," the woman, who did not want to be named,
told Beeld.
"I screamed at them, but they ignored me, and carried
on trying to break the security door down," she said.
She called her husband, who got there just as the robbers
were driving away. He chased them and crashed into their car. They then ran
away.
The woman called her local community policing forum.
"All the community policing forums in Meyerton
reacted," said Riette McKenzie, a spokesperson for the Golfpark community
policing branch.
A police helicopter and dog unit assisted in the search.
People formed search party lines in the streets and closed
off residential blocks until the robbers were found hiding in the veld.
