Cape Town - Commuters in Cape Town have expressed their outrage on Friday over a video showing Metrorail staff forcibly removing a woman from a train carriage despite her efforts to pay for a ticket.

The video, filmed last Saturday, shows five Metrorail officers standing around a female passenger and asking her to leave the train.

According to an eyewitness who filmed the event, and didn’t want to be named, the woman didn’t have a train ticket on her because the ticket office was closed.

In the video she is heard trying to pay for a ticket with cash.

The woman yells repeatedly "do not touch me", before a male officer drags her off her seat by the arms.

The woman in the video reportedly boarded the train at Wetton station at 06:38, but the ticket office only opened at 06:40 and she was unable to buy a ticket at the station without being late for work.

Other incidents

"I took the video myself using my cellphone camera and decided to post it onto YouTube so that people can see some of the things that happen on the trains, which I think are outright wrong," the eyewitness told News24

"It makes me worry, because it could have been me," David Engelbrecht, a regular commuter told News24.

"[The guards] have also plucked me around on the station once."

"We certainly condemn the use of force and the manner in which the commuter was treated," Metrorail regional manager Mthuthuzeli Swartz told News24.

Swartz said the footage lacks the clarity to positively identify the involved parties and called for anyone who witnessed the account to contact Metrorail directly.

"I am committed to put an end to valued customers being treated in such a manner," Swartz said.
