Johannesburg - A woman has told how conmen swindled her out of R1m shortly after she came out of hospital following treatment for breast cancer.

The woman told Eyewitness News that she was heavily medicated when she was approached by two Ugandan men, who were introduced to her by a friend she had known for 12 years.

The men convinced the former Swiss banker to do a ceremony appealing to her ancestors to get back all the money she had lost over the years.

The scam took place over several months and a week after the ceremony, a housebreaking was apparently staged at her house during which a trunk with money was swapped with paper and sawdust.

The woman said: “I’m very embarrassed about what happened, it’s not me, and it’s not how I normally behave.”

The men, who were neatly dressed and appeared to be well-educated, have been arrested and will soon appear in court.

Police have called on other victims of the scam to come forward.
