Johannesburg - The Congress of Traditional Leaders of South Africa (Contralesa) has elected Setlamorago Thobejane as its new president, the organisation said on Saturday.

Thobejane, who served as Contralesa's general secretary, was elected unopposed at a two day elective conference held in Johannesburg.

He takes over from Phathekile Holomisa who led the organisation for the past 23 years, the organisation said in a statement.

The rest of the new executive of comprised of deputy president Nyalala Pilane, general secretary Xolile Ndevu, assistant general secretary Pinky Mota, treasurer Gambani Mabena and Zolani Mkiva as national organiser.

The organisation said during his tenure as general secretary, Thobejane had been instrumental in addressing problems facing traditional institutions, especially initiation schools, language, culture as well as the preservation of indigenous knowledge systems.
