Johannesburg - One of the men accused of killing and raping Anene Booysen confessed to murdering the Bredasdorp teenager, a police officer said in court on Tuesday.

Investigating officer Edmund Abels told the Bredasdorp Magistrate’s Court that Johannes Kana, 21, confessed to raping and assaulting 17-year-old Booysen.

Booysen was raped, mutilated and murdered on 2 February.

Kana had not yet pleaded and was expected to apply for bail at a later stage.

Kana’s co-accused Jonathan Davids, 22, told the court he was not guilty of the brutal crime.

The court also heard on Tuesday that Davids was convicted of theft last February and received a five-year suspended sentence.

He also had three assault cases withdrawn against him in Bredasdorp, in September 2007, January 2008 and October 2011.

Booysen visited a nightclub in the town on Friday, 1 February.

A few hours later, she was gang-raped and mutilated. She was found at a construction site where she worked the next morning. She died in hospital later that day.
