Mahikeng - A police station commander was arrested in Swartruggens, near Rustenburg, for possession of R135 000 worth of illegal cigarettes, North West police said on Friday.

At about 23:00 on Thursday, crime intelligence, organised crime and public order policing units responded to a tip-off which led them to the policeman's house, said Brigadier Thulani Ngubane.

Twenty-seven boxes and 611 loose packets of cigarettes were recovered.

The policeman, 43, and his uncle, in his late 50s, were arrested and would appear in Swartruggens Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, Ngubane said.

In a separate incident earlier on Thursday, a Pakistani tuck shop owner, 28, was arrested in possession of 136 cartons of illegal cigarettes in the Rustenburg CBD.

The recovered cigarettes were valued at R30 200 said Ngubane.

The man would appear in Rustenburg Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
