Cop denied bail over prison rape
Durban - A police constable who was arrested for allegedly raping an awaiting-trial prisoner was denied bail in the KwaDukuza Magistrate's Court, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Wednesday.
Constable Langalethu Dumakude, 31, was denied bail on Monday, said Colonel Jay Naicker.
Dumakude allegedly raped an awaiting-trial prisoner at the Glendale police station on the North Coast of KwaZulu-Natal.
A police officer heard strange sounds coming from the holding cells at about 16:00 on Saturday and rushed in to investigate, Naicker said.
"He found the 32-year-old woman who told him she had just been raped by the constable at gun-point," he said.
The woman was in custody for assault.
Dumakude was remanded into police custody until December 28.
