Johannesburg - A policeman has been killed and another seriously injured in an accident on the N1 near Carousel Plaza, between Pretoria and Polokwane, police said on Tuesday.

Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said the two were sitting in their Flying Squad vehicle on the side of the road on Monday.

A truck apparently veered out of control and crashed into the car from behind, dragging it about 300m.

Sergeant Jacobus Andries Booyens, 35, and Warrant Officer Lucius Leeu Plaatjies, 48, were both taken to hospital.

Booyens died at the hospital.

"Both officers were trapped inside the vehicle. Booyens who was the driver was injured in the head, hips and legs and died later at the hospital.

"Plaatjies sustained injuries on the arm and face."

A case of culpable homicide, reckless and negligent driving was opened.

Dlamini said the truck driver was not arrested, but there would be further investigations.
