Johannesburg - A police officer who killed his girlfriend and her mother was found dead in Carnarvon on Thursday, Northern Cape police said.

Constable Serame Mpolokeng had been sought for the murder of his girlfriend Zola Malleta, 24, and her mother Sara Malleta, 54, police spokesperson Olebogeng Tawana said.

Mpolokeng stabbed his girlfriend several times with a bottle on 13 December.

When police arrived, he fled the scene.

His girlfriend was taken to Carnarvon Hospital, where he later found her and shot her and her mother, who was visiting at the time, dead.

He was last seen fleeing from the hospital.

On Thursday a farmer found Mpolokeng's body after following the smell of decomposition in a nearby veld.

The officer's service pistol and two cellphones were found next to him, while his car keys were found in his pocket.

Tawana said Mpolokeng might have shot himself.
