Johannesburg - A Johannesburg metro police officer was arrested for allegedly shooting and killing a man and wounding another in Dobsonville, Soweto, on Thursday, a spokesperson said.

The 45-year-old officer, who was off-duty and driving his private car, claimed the men wanted to hijack him shortly before 05:00, spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said.

A 25-year-old man was shot and killed in the scuffle.

According to police spokesperson Kay Makhubela the gunman was walking in the street when he found the victims standing with a woman.

A quarrel apparently started when he tried to get the woman to leave with him. He pulled out a gun and allegedly shot one man in the right hand.

The other man was shot once in the upper body. He died on the scene.

The shooter was arrested on the scene. He would appear in the Protea Magistrate's Court soon.

Minnaar said the officer would face an internal investigation.
