Johannesburg - A 47-year-old warrant-officer was arrested
in Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday for soliciting a R10 000 bribe from a fraud
accused, the Hawks said.
Spokesperson Paul Ramaloko said: "The officer was
arrested in a mall, minutes after he collected R7000 of the R10 000 he
solicited."
He said the man accused of fraud had been arrested in 2009
for allegedly grabbing someone else's land.
He contacted the police when the officer said he would
"squash" his case.
"The warrant-officer promised the suspect if he
received the R7 000 the case would be squashed and the land would in turn
become his," said Ramaloko.
"The officer will appear in the Pietermaritzburg
Magistrate's Court on Wednesday on a charge of corruption."
He said the officer was based at the Alexandra Road police
station.
